AbstractThe microstructure of pulverized coal was observed by coal petrography microscope. It was found that there were impurities with different structure and morphology from coal. In order to identify the impurities the thermogravimetric analysis and polarizing structure analysis of sample were conducted. The reflectance value was measured using coal petrography analyzer and spectrophotometer. The results showed that the DTG curve exhibited two distinctively different peaks indicating the presence of impurities. The polarizing structure of impurities was similar to the isotropy of coke. The comparison with semicoke standard sample revealed that the both interference lights were Level-1 red. The average reflectance value of impurities was about 4.6 which was much higher than the vitrinite reflectance of pulverized coal. The comprehensive characterizations proved that the impurities were semicoke.
