AbstractSpring is a kind of machinery elements which are widely used. It plays an important role in products so the quality of spring greatly influences on the whole reliability of products. The nondestructive testing (NDT) is an effective quality control tool. The common NDT methods for spring include eddy current testing magnetic particle testing penetrant testing and ultrasonic testing. It was found in tests that the ultrasonic surface wave was highly effective and reliable for the detection of inclusions pits and transversal cracks but the longitudinal cracks were easily missed. The magnetic particle testing had high sensitivity and intuitive results to the deep drawing stamps transversal and longitudinal cracks but the small dot inclusions and pits were easily missed. The fundamental principle and technological characteristics of the methods for the testing of steel wire materials and spring parts were compared and analyzed. It was found that the NDT procedure for spring should be developed based on the importance degree and the force bearing status of parts. The optimal NDT scheme should be obtained according to the material shape and possible defect type.
