AbstractThe orthogonal test method was applied in the multi-pass laser quenching experiment and the influence of the laser quenching processing parameters on the depth and the hardness of the hardening layer of gray cast iron was studied. The results showed that the overlap width affected the average depth and hardness of the hardening layer and had no obvious effect on the maximum depth and hardness. In addition increasing the scanning speed of laser led the decrease of the depth and hardness of the hardening layer. When the laser power was excessive on the sample surface quenched zone it might be melted cracks were appearedand the hardness was higher than that of the incomplete melted sample. Furthermore the increase of the laser power resulted in the higher value of the depth and hardness of the hardening layer. Additionally the influence of the laser power on the depth and hardness of the hardening layer was more significant when the scanning speed was relatively low.
