AbstractTaking the vermicular cast iron brake disc on which there were surface cracks as research subject the properties and causes of the crack were studied by the macroscopic observation microscopic analysis and Brinell hardness test. The results showed that the crack was thermal fatigue crack and mainly caused by the thermal stress produced by the thermal cycle load during brake process. Brake disc suffered high-low temperature cycle in one brake process. Without complete cooling the uneven temperature distribution of the disc surface caused the thermal stress. When the stress exceeded the material strength the thermal fatigue crack was initiated and continuously extended inside. To reduce the generation of the thermal fatigue cracks the temperature of the brake disc should be strictly monitored and the disc surface should be inspected regularly.
