AbstractThe existing national standard stipulates that the thickness of the ultrasonic testing workpiece should be larger than 8 mm. For the workpiece thickness less than 8 mm ultrasonic testing has always been vacant. The ultrasonic testing for the welds of 5 mm aluminum alloy was carried out with a 5P88K3 inclined probe with a larger K value and shorter front. And the metallographic experiment of the detected defects in the weld joint was carried out which proved that ultrasonic testing was feasible for detecting defects in welds of aluminum alloy sheet with the thickness less than 8 mm. In addition the welding defects could be quantified by the special weld defect contrast test blocks.
