Cause analysis of fracture failure for lower suspension arm

Abstract: The lower suspension arm in one vehicle was manufactured by forging forming using F45MnVS alloy. This lower suspension arm was fractured after driving for about 1 000 kilometers. In order to find out the cause of fracture, the fracture analysis, chemical composition analysis, mechanical properties testing and microstructure inspection of cracked lower suspension arm were conducted. Then the lower suspension arms in same batch were also inspected by tension test and metallographic structure test. The results showed that the fracture of the lower suspension arm belonged to single bend fatigue fracture. The crack was originated from the forging fold existed on the surface of the lower arm. The comprehensive analysis indicated that the root cause of the fracture was the forging fold on surface of lower suspension arm.
