Abstract: GCr15 bearing rings produced in one factory had defects on the surface after finishing. Comprehensive analyses were conducted by the means of optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and microhardness test. The results showed that the surface defects of unqualified bearing rings occurred before the heat treatment process, and such defects belonged to corrosion pits. Since the bearing rings had been stored in antirust liquid for a long time before heat treatment, it was speculated that the corrosion occurred during this period to form corrosion pits. In addition, the porosity in the raw material was exposed to the surface of the bearing sample during the machining process, making corrosion more likely to occur. At the same time, the rings were not fully baked before the heat treatment, which led to decarburization at the defect position during the heat treatment.
