Analysis of surface cracking on 40CrNiMoA steel step shaft

Abstract:Cracks were found on the surface of 40CrNiMoA steel step shaft during further machining after quenching and tempering. The causes of surface cracking were analyzed by means of macroscopic analysis, chemical composition analysis, metallographic observation, and fracture morphology observation. The results showed that the microstructure of the step shaft was coarse. The fracture had intergranular morphology. The cracks of the step shaft belonged to quenching cracking. The high quenching temperature and excessive quenching stress were the main reasons for the cracking of the step shaft.
