Abstract This paper summarized the development of twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steel. It emphatically introduced the key factor of the TWIP effect, effect of major alloying on structure and properties of TWIP steel, the stacking fault energy and its calculation, the mechanical properties of the first and second generation of TWIP steel, the impact of temperature strain rate and processing technique on TWIP steel, the mechanism of TWIP effect.
