Abstract The reasons for the formation of surface defects on the end face of exhaust valve made of 6Cr21Mn11Mo1V1Nb1N steel were analyzed in this paper. The results show that the defects were formed during the cutting process; the net-like carbides precipitated along the grain boundaries, which were caused by an inappropriate ageing or tempering process, can weaken the grain boundaries and thus lead to the defects during the cutting process.
