Abstract The magnetic powder inspection showed that there were small cracks on the upper side of the bead plug slide after the gun test. The cracks were analyzed by the chemical composition analysis, metallographic examination, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry detection. The results showed that the chemical composition of the take bead plug met the standard requirements, and the microstructure of the crack region caused the tissue stress to be large. The crack originated at the "V" notch, where the stress concentration was easy to be formed. The cracking intergranular fracture was brittle fracture. Thus, the main reason for the failure of the take bead plug was the brittle fracture caused by the stress concentration in the "V" notch.
