Preparation of refractory castable using high carbon ferrochrome slag

Abstract
Mineral analysis of the high carbon ferrochrome slag shows that boltonite and magnesium aluminum spinel are main mineral compositions. The performance of the refractory casting material with aggregate of high carbon ferrochrome slag was studied. The results show that the performance of refractory castable would be significantly affected by aggregate gradation of the slag, with the right amount of magnesia and using aluminate cement as the binding agent. After calcined at 1500℃, refractory castable with excellent room-temperature mechanical properties could be prepared with the compressive strength reached 110MPa and flexural strength 12.74MPa.
