4Analysis of the widespread wrong translation of “gangcai”

On the basis of ISO 6929—1987: steel products-definitions and classification, the widespread wrong translation of “gangcai” in iron and steel literatures and Chinese-English dictionaries were analysed. First, it points out all kinds of wrong translations of gangcai, and they were one by one analyzed through comparing their connotations and denotations with those of “gangcai”. Next, it expounds a basic principle of taking the english terms in english special literatures, especially in authoritative english original edition standards as right terms, and proves the right normative english translation of “gangcai” in terms of argument and different contexts. Finally, other english translations were given and the using conditions of them were explained.
