Abstract The formation mechanism of surface micro cracks of HSLA medium plates rolled from continuously cast slabs was studied by metallographic analysis,scanning electron microscopy and XEDS analysis.The test results show that some Cu and As are observed near the cracks and the surface micro cracks are along the grain boundaries.The main reason of surface micro crack formation is that Cu、As and Sn are segregated at the austenite grain boundaries forming Cu、As and Sn enriched phase in scale/steel interface by selective oxidation and the hot ductility of steel is deteriorated tremendously,Some countermeasures for preventing surface micro cracks are proposed.
