Abstract A new ferritepearlite wheel steel with C and Si as main strengthening elements was developed aiming at the damage characteristics of heavy duty wagon wheel.With rational C and Si contents, the steel has high strength, relatively high toughness and reasonable phase transformation characteristics. Online loading test showed that the new steel has a better balance between antimechanical and antithermal damage properties and is more suitable for heavy duty transportation than conventional wheel steel.
