Abstract Shape and gauge control interact each other intensively in tandem cold rolling process,making control ineffective and unstable. A shape and gauge coupling model was established based on systematic and theoretical analysis of the factors affecting shape and gauge, then a shape and gauge complex decoupling control system was developed based on the decoupling design of the model.By simulation with Matlab/Simulink and practice on 8high fivestand tandem cold mill ,the complex decoupling control system proved effective to improve shape and gauge control of strip.
