Abstract A series of tests were carried out for a coal, including composition analysis, sulfur content analysis, macerals analysis, determination of caking index, maximum colloid thickness and capacity of caking inerts. The results showed that this coal is of 1/3 coke coal with high caking characteristics, low content of ash and sulfur and high content of active components. Based on the characteristics of this coal and actual conditions at Jia Hua Coke Plant, a preliminary optimal proportion of coal mixture was proposed to produce coke for export. After the verification by pilot test, the final proportion of coal mixture was obtained.
