Study on Electromagnetic Continuous Casting of W9 High Speed Steel |

Abstract The electromagnetic billet casting technology and solidification structure of W9 high speed steel billet were studied. The type and distribution of eutectic carbides in traditional mold cast ingot and electromagnetic cast billet of W9 were compared, the thickness of ledeburite net and solidification cooling rate were measured. The results indicate that electromagnetic cast billet has smooth surface, shallow oscillation marks, good shape, dense structure without defects. The electromagnetic continuous casting can refine grains, carbides and ledeburite web, promote precipitation of M2C and MC carbides and reduce M6C precipitation. The metallurgical quality of electromagnetic continuous cast billet is much better because the calculated cooling rate was 3.4×104 K/s at periphery, 6.5×103 K/s for r/2 and 3.9×102 K/s at center of billet.
