Theoretical Research of Applying Mg to Ultra Clean Steel Production |

Abstract Theoretical research of applying magnesium’s to ultra clean steel production was carried out. It was shown that deoxidization capacity of Mg is much better than that of Al and Mg can reduce the content of oxygen in steel to much lower level than Al. Experimental results showed that the content of dissolved oxygen in steel can be lower than 1×10-6,at a content of Mg of 10×10-6. For traditional aluminumkilled steel, Ca treatment can be replaced by Mg treatment to decrease the oxygen content in steel further and improve the cleanness of steel. At the same time, MgO formed by Mg deoxidization has a strong capability to enlarge the area of the low melting point oxides in the CaOSiO2Al2O3 ternary phase diagram, making probability of producing liquid nonmetallic inclusions composed of CaO, SiO2 and Al2O3 higher.
