Abstract In order to maintain effective and stable soft reduction parameters, a slab dynamic soft reduction control model was developed, and the calculation flow is presented. The gap calculation method for start and end segments of soft reduction is represented in detail, and the rules of thermal shrinkage of slab and the requirements for switching soft reduction modes are analyzed. The model application results showed that the index of grade C central segregation of low carbon steel, peritectic steel and low alloy steel slabs could be controlled under 0.5, and grade C central porosity could be removed mostly.
