Abstract High strength and low cost wheel steel for commercial vehicles, whose ferrite grain size is 46 μm and the tensile strength of which is up to 550 MPa, was developed by accurate composition adjustment (trimming) and TMCP.The results showed that this test wheel steel has great plasticity, lowtemperature toughness and weldability. The results of underreaming experiment for Q235B, DP590 and the test steel showed that the test steel has excellent flange elongation. The wheel spokes were made from steel and dynamic cornering fatigue test was carried out on assembled wheels. The results showed that the yield of spokes was larger than 99% and the fatigue life of wheels was high enough while the quality of wheel was degraded by 10%.
