Abstract Based on the deformation characteristics of seamless tube during stretch reduction,a 3D thermomechanical coupled finite element model was established to simulate the deformation process of tube on 18stand stretch reducing mill. The comparison of finite element analysis results with measured ones indicated that the simulation model is practical and reliable. It was found that the transverse wall thickness distribution is nonuniform and that is the cause of hexagonal bore formation. The model can be used to analyse product flaws and instruct technological design.
