Abstract Effect of argon blowing and the second refining on inclusion removal in pipeline steel were investigated. The results showed that, the total oxygen removal rate of LF refining is about 20%, and N content is increased slightly. The area ratio of inclusion is decreased by 40%50% during LF refining. After LF refining the fraction of inclusions of 25 μm in size is increased from 40%50% to 80%90%, but the size of large inclusions is not changed obviously.
