Abstract The billet quality is directly affected by the evenness of initial shell’s thickness.The thermal dipping simulation with Bi was performed to study the heat transfer in initial shell cast in the mold with longitudinal narrow grooves. The results show that in the mold with longitudinal narrow grooves the heat transfer in initial shell can be improved markedly.
