| Microstructure and properties of TiC reinforced 304 stainless steel |

Abstract Microstructure and properties of TiC reinforced 304 stainless steel prepared by in-situ reaction have been investigated. Experimental results show that introduction of TiC particles to 304 stainless steel resulted in significant refinement of dendritic at as-cast and twin after forged and heat-treated, quadrate Cr23C6 and spherical TiC particles were observed in microstructure after forged and heat-treated. The addition of TiC particles resulted in significant increase of strength, but decreased ductility. TiC particles exposed on the sliding surface of the strengthened steel supported the load and generated oil film in the gap between the surface of sample and ring, thus preventing the matrix from severe wear. The strength and wear-resistance significant improved with the increasing of TiC content.
