Abstract A new submerged entry nozzle (SEN) with four outlets was used for casting heavy rail steel. The level fluctuation, impacting pressure and penetration depth in the mold were measured and analyzed. The fluid flow field in the mold was simulated. The results show that the SEN with four outlets is suitable for casting heavy rail steel. With such SEN,all the blooms can be cast without conditioning at a qualification rate of 99.95%.
