Abstract The 3dimensional morphology and composition of inclusions in a Alkilled steel were successfully revealed using the method of partial acid extraction. During partial acid extraction process, only the iron matrix reacted with the acid, and Al2O3 inclusions remained. Short time acid extraction did not change the composition of inclusions. The main inclusions in the current Alkilled steel were mainly 5200 μm Al2O3based inclusions with different morphology. The current work indicated that the partial acid extraction is an efficient method to achieve the 3dimensional morphology and composition of inclusions in steel.
