Abstract To improve productive efficiency of ironmaking in blast furnace, the main guiding ideology of operators and managers should be switched from simple high productivity to low fuel rate. A new key performance indicator, which concerned with bosh gas index, hearth area productivity and bosh gas efficiency index, was proposed to evaluate the routine operations of ironmaking in blast furnace and to decrease effectively specific fuel rate of hot metal.
