Abstract The micro-mechanical behavior of inclusion in X80 pipeline steel under tensile loading was investigated by means of SEM in-situ observation. The influence of shape and size of inclusion on crack initiation and propagation was analyzed. The results show that the larger the size of an inclusion is, the more the number of cracks initiated in the inclusion is, and the lower the initiation stress of the first crack is; the shape and size of inclusion determine the location of the first crack; for the inclusion with irregular shape and many shape corners, firstly cracks generate in inclusion and initiate in the matrix, then no longer propagation; inclusion has little influence on tensile performance of X80 pipeline steel.
