Analysis on stopper rod erosion mechanism and improvement for aluminum bearing cold heading steel |

Abstract The cause of stopper rod erosion and improving measures have been presented by analyzing the materials of stopper refractory,observing the element distribution within the erosion layer and the thermodynamic calculation. The research results show that the main reason for the stopper rod erosion was the high mass of C and SiC in the stopper rod refractory and the calcium-aluminates with low melting point produced by the reaction of high persent [Ca] in the liquid steel and Al2O3,SiO2,C in the stopper rod refractory,and the stopper rod erosion can dramatically be reduced by adjusting calcium treatment and replacing magnesia carbon stopper rod refractory. Through these improving measures, the working life of stopper increased from 286-824 min to 460-1 020 min,the average working life increased from 495 min to 802 min,the problem of stopper rod erosion has been basically solved.
