Abstract Permeability of austenitic stainless steel (ASS) is important for a phone cell. The signals will be shielded while the permeability is too high. The microstructures of X2CrNiMo18143 ASS,solid solution and hardened products were analyzed by SEM,OM and XRD,and the permeability properties of X2CrNiMo18143 ASS were studied. The results show that the permeability of X2CrNiMo18143 ASS is mainly determined by Creq/Nieq ratio, precipitation of secondary phase and stability of austenitic.X2CrNiMo18143 ASS with appropriate Creq/Nieq ratio can minimize the ferrite content in the slab. The ferrite content in the slab is the premise of low permeability of the product. Appropriate hot working process can ensure that CHI phase,Laves phase and phase can not precipitate. The permeability of hardened products also depends on the formation of martensitic transformation induced by invisible deformation during deformation. So the permeability of both solid solution and cold hardening state can be controlled at a low level which range from 1.003 to 1.005 H/m.
