Abstract

Internal cracks in the continuous cast billet of a bearing steel were studied to understand the causes of such defects and to suggest remedial measures. The cracks were visible with the naked eye at vertical sections. The existing cracks were opened through mechanical testing, and the fracture surfaces were observed by SEM. Metallography, SEM observations and chemical analysis by EDX revealed that the cracks were generated due to the preferential segregation of Mg, O, Al, Si and subsequent formation of various types of oxide and aluminosilicate inclusions. The size of alumina is 70μm in length and 40μm in width that may decrease the life of bearing steels. Inclusions at the crack indicate the relevance between inclusions and cracks that the inclusions act as a second phase that may influence the solidification of the matrix and even act as a source of stress concentration so that cracks may appear.
