Abstract:The taper of wide and thick slab mould of a domestic steel mill was optimized based on the actual production situation. A finite element method (FEM) was employed for the calculation of temperature field and law of slab shrinkage in the mold. The influences of casting speed and liquid steel superheating on temperature field and law of slab shrinkage were analyzed. Based on the results obtained the mould taper was optimized: using larger taper at 120~300mm near liquid surface and using minor taper at mould bottom 300~900mm from liquid surface. The result is very similar with that in reality, showing that the result is right.
