Abstract:In order to prevent reoxidation from occurring during the continuous casting process, the measures of protective casting are usually used, one of which is shielding the immersion nozzle with Ar form the contact between molten steel and air. CO2 with the purity of 99.9% was used as shielding gas by the original shielding gas pipeline instead of Ar in the continuous casting nozzle through comparing the content of O and N before and after the protective casting and analyzing the inclusions. The research showed that comparing with the conventional process of Ar, it wouldn’t lead to the intensification of reoxidation and had the same protective effect by using CO2 as shielding gas. And the description and constitution of inclusions was almost same in the two shielding gas process conditions. In addition, the average quality of large inclusions decreased by 16.6%. So except the steel grades with particularly stringent requirement of O content like bearing steel, CO2 could complete the risk of protection casting in continuous casting process instead of Ar.
