Abstract:Variable-width casting process is applied to producing different specifications of the slab with a tundish for two-strand slab casting. The discrepancy of the velocities and the widths between the two strands affects the casting process. Based on this situation, the flow field in the water models of tundish and mold with different casting sections was measured with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. The experimental results show that the variable-width casting process can be applied when the discrepancy of the widths between the two strands is small (about 200 mm), because of the similar flow field in the tundish and molds – the average velocity of two strands differ by about 5.83% and the maximum velocity differ by about 1.22%. However, it is not suitable for the large discrepancy of the widths between the two strands (about 1 100 mm), due to the differences in the velocity of jet region, the impact depth of liquid steel and the level of vortex center, which may reach up to about 50%. Those differences may worsen the consistency of the casting process between the two strands.
