Abstract:A 1:2 water model was employed to study the flow characteristics of molten steel in the section of 1300 mm × 2.2 mm thin strip induction heating continuous casting tundish based on the similarity principle. The average residence time and the dead zone, the volume of the piston zone and the mixing zone are calculated by measuring the residence time distribution curve of the tundish at the exit of the continuous casting tundish with or without the weir and dam. The results show that the combination of weir and dam can effectively improve the flow field in the tundish. The dead zone ratio of the tundish flow field is reduced from 16.2% to 5.4%, the average residence time is increased from 797 s to 900 s and the short-circuit flow phenomenon is basically eliminated after adding a weir with 420 mm height above the channel, a dam with a height of 100 mm located at the exit of the channel 380 mm.
