Abstract:Twin roll thin strip casting of steel has the potential of energy saving, high efficiency and low production cost. After nearly 50 years development by most advanced industrial countries, enormous amount of experimental and production trial data as well as theoretical progress have been obtained. However, due to the fundamental design imperfections, the existing twin roll strip casting (TRSC) processes represented by Nucor's Castrip technology have many issues that made it hard to compete with advanced continuous casting direct rolling processes. As a result, existing TRSC technologies are still facing many challenges on their way to industrialization and commercialization. Guided by proven theories and analyze the metallurgical behavior of the molten steel under strong cooling from a different angle, it may be possible to overcome the many difficult obstacles and develop a much-improved new process with high production rate, high quality and high efficiency (3H). Such a new technology could have disruptive technology potential, and contribute greatly to the steel technology development and national economy. To achieve this goal, the shortcomings of the existing technology and their underline causes are discussed together with the introduction of the concept of a new 3H strip casting process.
