Abstract The continuous casting process of 28MnCr5 produced at 50 t EAF in special steel of Laiwu Steel Corporation was studied. The solidification structures of 28MnCr5 billets were simulated by CAFE of ProCAST, so that the superheat effect on solidification structures would appear. The results indicated that superheat had little effect on shell thickness when it ranges from 10 ℃ to 40 ℃, the columnar crystals increased and isometric crystals reduced with superheat. The solidification structures were up to standard of 28MnCr5 when superheat were 10－20 ℃.
