Abstract The breakout mechanism of slab casting was introduced, and according to different types of breakout, the reason has been analyzed. In order to reduce the slab casting breakout rate, the detailed countermeasures have been developed on technology, operation, equipment and management in every process of steelmaking, refining and continuous casting. And through the implementation of various countermeasures, good application effects were achieved and the breakout rate was 0 from January 2012 to August 2012.
