Abstract Mold powder is a very significant and critical material and takes a key role during casting. The main functions of the mold powder are to play insulation, prevent re-oxidation, control heat transfer of liquid steel, and lubricate shell. It is a key material to promote the development of continuous casting technology, and ensure the smooth process of continuous casting and quality of casting. In view of its importance, various physical and chemical properties of mold powder, are detailed analyzed combined with steel types and cast section and other conditions, systematic analysis on the impact of performance of mold powder and how to choose the correct mold powder are also discussed.
