Abstract In the calculation of strand mechanics，there are many methods of bending and straightening. In continuous bending and straightening, the continuous curvature or the continuous derivative of curvature are different ways，based on which a concept of smooth bending and straightening is created. The effect of different ways on the calculation results are compared. The results show that, roller force in continuous bending and straightening mode is larger than that in the smooth bending straightening mode. Considering the mechanicsl and equipment, the smooth straightening curve if recommended for the design of continuous casting machine external arc curve..
