Abstract A three-dimensional mathematical model was established in present work. It was used to calculate the fluid flow in the mold under electromagnetic stirring force. The flow structure and distribution characteristics under different continuous casting parameters and stirring electric current were studied. Based on the calculation results, the Mold Flux Entrapment Index (MFEI) of free surface and Velocity Uniform Index (VUI) in continuous casting mold were proposed to evaluate the stirring effect of flow field, and the optimization method of electromagnetic stirring parameters was suggested.
