Abstract The effect of electromagnetic stirring (EMS) on the as-cast microstructure of 1Cr13 martensite stainless steel was investigated in experiment. The results showed that in the ingot without EMS, there are mainly columnar crystals, interdendritic bridging at the center, center cavity and rarefaction. The reasonable parameters of EMS can promote the solidification feeding. In this experiment, the parameters of current 250 A and frequency 12 Hz with EMS for 60 seconds after the ingot had solidified for 90 seconds, which can promote the solidification feeding, increase the ratio of equiaxed crystal and improve the quality of the ingot. The carbon and the chromium in the ingot were better distributed with the EMS, which could markedly reduce the degree of microsegregation.
