Effects of nickel addition on preparation and properties of low-carbon Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC-C refractories in continuous casting |

Abstract Low-carbon Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC-C refractories were fabricated via a reaction sintering process, using fused corundum, α-Al2O3, ZrSiO4, active carbon and natural graphite as main starting materials, nickel powder as additive. Phase composition, sintering properties and cold crushing strength were investigated. The research results show that the as-prepared refractories mainly consist of corundum, t-Zr0.92Y0.08O1.96, β-SiC and graphite. The sintering properties and crushing strength can be increased. The crushing strength of the sample doped with 5% nickel powder reaches 26.5 MPa, which is 2.6 times as high as that of the sample without nickel addition.
