Abstract Sintering properties of mold fluxes can affect the performance of continuous casting directly, thus the sintering tendency of mold fluxes is adopted as a significant indicator to evaluate the performance of mold fluxes. As the methods for sintering-property measurements are not unified at present, and the result is also not accurate, a method to measure the sintering temperature and quantity of liquid phases formed in sintering was proposed. Sintering-property measurements is conducted in inert atmosphere, after exerting appropriate compressive stress on mold flux samples during heating, corresponding on-site volumetric strain can be detected to acquire the information of liquid phases formed in the micro-area of mold fluxes. As the formation behavior of liquid phases in the micro-area affects the sintering property of mold fluxes directly, sintering properties of mold fluxes can be obtained by analyzing the volumetric strain data. Experiments proved that sintering-property measurements can measure the sintering temperature and sintering speed of mold fluxes accurately with excellent repeatability.
