Abstract��For the high strength spring steel 60Si2CrVAT produced in a company�� it was found that in the mechanical property test before ex-work�� the tensile strength and yield strength met the standard requirements�� but the percentage reduction of area and percentage elongation after fracture were obviously lower than the standard requirements. The fracture cause of the sample with the abnormal mechanical property was analyzed with stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy ��SEM��. The results showed that the physical-mechanical characteristic unqualified samples were fractured abnormally�� and the main reason for the abnormal fracture was that there was surface hardening and even micro-crack on the surface of the sample during the sample preparation process. Therefore�� the abnormal fracture can be eliminated by improving the machining mode of the rough specimen after heat treatment.
