AbstractA simulated-corrosion test apparatus which can simulate the upper deck condition in a cargo oil tank COT of tankers was used to investigate the effect of Sb on the corrosion behavior of a low alloy steel on the condition of the dry-humid alternate environment containing CO2-SO2-O2-H2S gas. The results indicated that Sb reduced the corrosion loss of the test steels on the upper deck conditions. The SEM results showed that the inner rust layer of Sb-bearing low alloy steel contained fewer cracks than that of carbon steel. The Raman spectra results showed that the rust layer of Sb-bearing steels had a higher content of -FeOOH than that of carbon steel. The EPMA results indicated that the Sb enrichment region was the contact areas between the inner layer and the matrix. The XPS results showed that the Sb in the inner rust layer was in the form of the protective metal oxide Sb2O5.
