Analysis of fine microstructure of spring steel 55SiCr

Abstract

The electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) testing technique was used for the comparison analysis of two kinds (domestic and imported) of high-quality spring steels (55SiCr), including the dimension and distribution of pearlite colonies as well as the rolling texture. The results indicated that pearlite colony in two high-quality spring steels was very small with average size of 6-8 μm. The proportion of pearlite colony less than 10 μm was up to 84 % for the domestic steel sample. Both high-quality spring steels showed three types of grain orientation, i.e., <101>, <001> and <111>. For the domestic steel, the grain orientation mainly concentrated on <001> and <111>, while the imported spring steel exhibited relatively weak texture intensity in <101>.
