Abstract

The origination of longitudinal cracks in colddrawing freecutting steel was investigated with the help of metallographic microscope, field emission microscope and heat treatment. Slender sulfides were broken into microporosities under the action of tensile stress inducting the crack. The crack extended along banded pearlite. In hot rolled state the granular linea sulfide was induced to precipitation of banded pseudopearlite. This pseudopearlitic banded structure can be eliminated by means of heat treatment.
