Abstract White band in high carbon steel billet is formed due to the strong stirring intensity of FEMS. The central carbon segregation and cavity and porosities in billet are aggravated with the appearance of white band. The dendrite growth direction is changed and dendrites are curved in the zone of white band. The mechanism of white band formation is scouring.
